I’ve found that in the 12 years that I have worked in the health and fitness industry that the people who find meditating ‘annoying’ or ‘hard’ are the people that need it the most. They are the people who are constantly on the go, never sit still and have a to do list metres long. I understand because I am one of these people and I’ve learnt that meditation is of enormous benefit to me and others like me. I want to share with you a quick story about meditation. I am only new to the meditation world and a little while back I went to a women’s networking event and we mingled and then we did a guided meditation from an amazing woman who is very into meditating. When the host first mentioned that we would be meditating I was already looking for an escape route! This is because in my head and lots of other people I’ve spoken to, meditation is hard. To cut a long story short, I didn’t run out the door I decided to do the professional thing and stay. To be honest with you parts of the meditation were a bit too much for me and I felt rather silly however I learnt a very valuable lesson on the day.

Meditation can be whatever I want it to be!

  • It can be sitting by the water and listening to the waves crash.
  • It can be lighting a candle and watching the flame for 5 minutes.
  • It can be sitting by a pool and dangling my feet in the water.
  • It can be going to a children’s playground and swinging on the swings.
  • Or it can be sitting quietly with no distractions and remaining in the moment.

Like I said from my experience, many people believe meditation is this skill you have to learn and therefore it’s too hard. I’ve found since I started my meditation journey that since I redefined what meditation meant to me, I’ve found it much easier to do. Meditation to me means ‘quiet time without the usual distractions of life’. I challenge you to question your own definitions of meditation and see if redefining and clarifying what meditation means to you has an impact on your meditation journey and therefore on reducing stress.

Did you know that there are over 500 free different apps on meditation for the ipad/iphone. Meditation no longer needs to be about learning from an experienced teacher, it can be a journey that you discover on your own at your own pace.

My favourite is one where you can listen to the sound of rain. So peaceful.

I challenge you to discover your own definition of what meditation means to you.
